Moving Closer to Family: A Journey from Baltimore to San Diego

A couple from Baltimore reached out to us with the desire to move closer to their daughter and her young family in San Diego. The husband was still working and planned to continue for another year in Baltimore. Our task was to find them a San Diego 55+ community near their family that they liked, so they could receive listing updates and keep tabs on the market trends.

The Impact of COVID-19 on the Housing Market

Unfortunately, COVID-19 hit, causing home prices in San Diego to skyrocket, far surpassing those in Baltimore. This made it difficult for our buyers to afford a home in San Diego. Despite this challenge, they stayed committed, reviewing the listings we sent and asking detailed questions about the homes and communities.

Preparing for the Big Move

Our clients owned two homes—one in Baltimore and another in Rehoboth Beach, Delaware—that they needed to sell to free up equity for their San Diego purchase. Balancing this with everyday life, while the husband continued to work full-time, was no small feat.

Finding the Perfect Home

As the husband’s retirement date neared, a move-in-ready home became available in Oaks North, a 55+ community in Rancho Bernardo. We arranged a FaceTime showing of the property with their son-in-law accompanying me. Our clients loved the home, and we made an offer, which was accepted by the sellers.

A Unique Purchase Experience

The home inspection was conducted with the buyers present through FaceTime. Fortunately, none of the items in the inspection report were deal-breakers, allowing us to move forward with the sale. What made this purchase unique was that the buyers did not physically set foot in their new home until the final walkthrough, just a few days before the close of escrow. Everyone—buyers included—felt a huge sense of relief when the property met all expectations and satisfaction.

4 years: A Long Journey, Well Worth the Wait

From our first contact to the closing of their new home, the process took four years. It was a long journey, but seeing the joy and excitement on our clients’ faces as they walked into their new home for the first time made it all worthwhile.
